Default VTEC woes

Hi all, newbie here. My Honda is a 2006 CR-V SE and I'm having problems with my VTEC solenoid. I've read a large number of threads/articles on how to replace the VTEC solenoid and clean it's screen and still can't find a answer to my, seemingly, particular problem. Ok, so the car is now in limp mode and here's what I did to get it there. The solenoid gasket was leaking - the car ran fine, so I ordered a new solenoid (not OEM), Put the new solenoid in and the car immediately went into limp mode. Ok I think, so the original worked and I've read that after market vtec solenoids often don't cut it, so I put it the original back in with a new gasket (the original was working fine originally). Fired the car up and it immediately went back into limp mode. At this point I'm thinking that maybe I broke a wire. So I go looking for information about the VTEC wiring and this stopped me cold. Every article I read had the solenoid with just one wire - mine has two - a green/yellow and black (see pic). I assume the black is ground (but why the "extra" ground?). The oil pressure switch has two wires, a green and yellow (see 2nd pic). I'd like to test for continuity and/or voltage using these vtec connector pins. Can anyone out there tell me if I can easily check for voltage on these wires and, if so, the readings I might expect to get. All information is appreciated.

Thank you in advance

What is the specific code you are getting?

Yeah, knowing the code will allow you to limit your testing.

the solenoid has a power wire and a ground wire, power is applied when the ecu wants vtec.

the pressure switch wiring has an ecu wire and a ground, it is a 12v pull-up circuit with a normally closed switch. 12v on the ecu wire when the circuit is open, 0V on the ecu wire when the circuit is closed and grounded.

Unfortunately, it's in limp mode and I can't drive it anywhere. And, the ODB II reader I purchased, simply gave a reading of "error." Not much help.

Seems like a good reason to upgrade your scan tool.
