Stripped spark plug threads
Hi. I'm driving a 2014 Civic EX, and my spark plug size is 12mm, I believe. Does it matter which helicoil depth I buy? I am seeing M12 X1.25, 1.5, and 1.75 but can find no information as to which depth would repair my spark plug threads.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you.

While I have been told before to seek professional help, it has been for other reasons.
Seriously, though, I do appreciate the concern. I may sound inept with the question but I am confident I can get the head rethreaded without pooching the head, but I am just not sure on how to discern the right helicoil for the job. I sure as hell don't want to use a kit that is too big.
I guess it's like tires. You don't know what all of those numbers mean until you learn. Then it just makes sense.
I still need to know what size helicoil for a 2014 Civic EX spark plug, and what length to insert. Has anyone done this to a '14?
I would take it to the dealership, but they are the one's who cross-threaded the last plug. (I bought new and always used dealership.)
I have 2 dealerships here in Durham, ON and they are both useless when it comes to servicing. I won't get into the details. (See youtube for Whitby/Oshawa Honda if you want a chuckle, though.))
Again, thanks for the replies and I am looking forward to getting this done with your advice on helicoil size.
Cheers, and Merry Christmas

The dealership should be the ones making it right if they are the one that damaged the threads.
Get a good plug and measure the thread length. That will give you your answer on length. Then you need to look up the plug part number to figure out the thread pitch. Or use a thread gauge to measure the thread pitch.
You are also going to be $200-500 in tooling to do this. With the depth of the spark plug wells you are going to need special long reach tools.
Really you should seek a professional and I don't mean a dealership, go find a good independent repair shop.
The risk of getting this wrong with limited experience is pretty high.

Well, my friend, unlike so many, I am going to follow your advice, as that is why I came here. I will get a quote from an engine shop.
I agree about the dealership, but after my warranty ended, I decided to do the tune-up, and once I had the plug out of the screwed hole, it would have been my word against theirs at that point.
I wish I had have got them to do one last tune-up.
Thanks for your advice and your time.
Stay well.

... not to mention, a "Heli-coil" is NOT the best product for this repair. A "Time Sert" is a much better product.
I agree with Ryanthegreat1 about seeking professional help on this one... the cost of the tools to do the job once properly will likely cost you just as much as a quality shop will charge... and it isn't their first time doing a repair such as this. Good Luck.

Thank you so very much to all who assisted me in coming to the decision to take my car in. I have an appt. for tomorrow for less than I would have spent on tools, and any damage resulting to the bottom end from here on in is not mine.
When you take the time to respond to people such as myself, you really do make a real difference.
Thanks and Merry Christmas.
God bless.
