Default Resurrecting the R

Finally getting the R back on the road. Motor pulled out, giant box of NLA OEM parts organized.
Additional one of a kind parts pulled from their various storage places...
Car shoud be done in the next couple of weeks.

VERY cool! Great to see a restore thread again. I love reading them.

Love the old skool SMSP header. I had one for my Prelude.

What's the story behind your car? Why was it down for so long?

Sub'd.

I have had it since '07. Burned a valve in #2 back in 2010 on the way to work.
pulled the motor, bottom end was bored over for new OEM JDM type R pistons, new crank bearings. Reassembled by SloBoy racing down in Orlando. They also cut the valve seats on a Serdi, so 23 angle valve job.
I rebuilt the head, all super tech valves, springs and retainers. Jun B cams. Spoon 2 layer HG. OG honda tech 72mm R throttle body.
I will post up engine assembly pics from 10 years ago in the next day or so.

So once the engine blew you slowly worked on getting the engine rebuilt? How long ago was the engine work completed?

Glad to see some OG owners still around.

I pulled and rebuilt the motor in about 3 months, right after the valve was burned. The motor has been on the engine stand in the garage since then. Tightly wrapped up in plastic. All parts have been either in the trunk of the car or other storage locations.

Life gets priority sometimes, kids, work, kids, jobs.

I am excited to get it back up and running. The best part of the story is a local Acura dealer is putting it back together and the tech working on it is a 25yr master tech. He has built many a race motor and car, so it is in good hands.

He is loving all the OG parts and getting it back on the road. March of next year will be 12 years since it started.

Just so some of you new guys know what a burned valve looks like...
Honda engines start to burn oil by pushing oil past the valve seals. Eventually, it ignites and turns into a high pressure blow torch and cuts its way out via the valve and valve seat.

Very cool! I never knew that's how to burn a valve!

You a member of ITRCA? Post your rebuild there if you can, too.

Ya, member on ITRCA, can't remember what email I used back in 2000. I will post up the thread there once my new account is approved.

Very nice! Coming along quickly!

I assume it's the B18C5 engine? Original engine to the car?

Yes, Original Engine, C5, Trans, everything has vin plates and all vin stickers are on all the body panels.

I was going to put this in, but decided to keep the original motor installed..

PDR got all of the dents out. they still have a little work to do I think, but the majority of the dents and ripples are gone.

The Service Manager at the dealer is an old Honda Guy, probably my brother in a former life. He is as excited about the car as me I think.

I have some shoes coming for the OEM JDM Wheels, should be here this coming week.

Old pic of the wheels with the old tires. Wheels have been in storage, so they are perfect.

Also been trying to find my Legend GS Calipers to put on the car, have to keep digging in my boxes, hopefully I will find them this week before we tear down the hubs for new bearings and bushings.

There was a member on the boards that worked throttle bodies, essentially turning them into the 72mm throttle bodies available from spoon. I sent mine off back in 2010 and got it back in a couple of weeks.

I bought a used set of 280cc Lude injectors back in the day and sent them off to RC Engineering. The were cleaned, blueprinted and flow tested. They went into the motor as the stock R injectors will max out in duty cycle once you pass the 200HP mark. I expect to be above that with the Cams, Supertec light valve train, throttle body and the header. It will be tuned locally by a guy here in town that knows the S300.

SMSP TEST FIT

This might be the last Header Dave made for an R. He made it for me and had it JetHot coated in silver ceramic. It is a work of art. Many knock offs out there, but there is only one SMSP.

He also welded me a short race cat with the correct collector flange and we will have to shorten the B pipe on my Fujitsubu RMA01 a few inches for everything to fit together.

Went up on the lift today. They are replacing all of the suspension components first.
Ball Joints, tie rods, front bearings.
