Honda Civic MK1 1978 Radio/audio upgrade
Hey dear Honda lovers,
My biggest concern is getting a great audio system in the car. I've seen a thread on a Dutch forum about installing an audio system, but he mentioned there were more options on the English forum.
However, he didn't put any links in his post to the English tutorial/walk through. I've been looking for a while but can't find anything; is there anyone that could link me to more info on replacing the original radio to a modern one?
Thank you in advance guys!!

There is a first gen civic group on Facebook. Its more active than this forum, that's unfortunate as subjects get lost fast and searches suck. Yes there is a lot of ways to get modern tunes in a classic Honda. There is a factory blanking plate and a lot use that and mount a modern stereo in the glove box. Other ways to do it also. The automatic is not really an auto just semi automatic. You still have to shift it, and its a two speed. Slow and sort of sucky. Rust is a huge deal on these cars. Lots of new buyers find shiny paint and lots of bondo covering rust in certain parts of the world so beware.

Hey Don, thanks for your reply. I will look on facebook for that group, even though i was happy to never go on that despicable platform.. well, if i find info on the stereo radio situation, it is worth it. hehe.
Do you have any info on where to find that factory blanking plate?
Thanks, have a nice weekend!

Erik,
Welcome to the group. I still have just the AM radio in my 1976 1200 Civic hatchback. All I changed was adding better speakers in the REAR seat pockets.
For info on audio UPGRADES, this HONDA FORUM has a SUBFORUM on AUDIO gear. While not specific to CLASSIC models, it's the same stuff, really. I'd ask over there -- and you can avoid Zuckerberg completely.
Just go up to the main top menu and you'll see it down on the bottom somewhere.
GREAT BUY, by the way!!!

No I don't. They are getting harder to find. They actually came on a lot of 1st gen civics as the radio was an option. I used to have a few of them, taken off Civics in the pick and pulls about 20 years ago. They do turn up. I can post the question over there and point them in this direction. You are right about Facebook, staying off is a good thing.

Some people from the FB group wanted me to pass this on. Its sitting in a gen 1 civic dash.
What a find. The retrosound are not cheap for very little wattage, 25w RMS per channel. Most install a hidden radio with a wireless controller. Keep the original radio and install your own in the glove box. You will need speakers as well, because the original ones will have a failling foam support.
The automatic is a real slush box, change the trans oil as honda auto does not have a transmission filter.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the replies. In the end i'm going for a system without radio, so i will hookup an amp, subwoofer and 4 speakers. I'm going to put it in one of these days, only thing i'm still wondering is, where can i easily take the Remote (turn on) cable from? I luckily found a empty grommet to pull the power cable through. I'll use a 3,5mm female cable to send the audio to the amp. (https://www.amazon.nl/verlengkabel-a...62603225&psc=1 Sorry it's the Dutch Amazon, any suggestions to find this cable in better build quality/better seller, are welcome. I am going to put the female next to the cigarette lighter, there's a tiny hole and i think it should fit nice)
Will try to post some pictures too once i got it working and looking nice.
Merry christmas!
