Default 1991 civic hatchback DX first car how much horsepower can I expect?

Hey everyone, this is my first post despite finding myself in the forums frequently! But i will be eligible to get my license this Monday and my parents are buying my first car, and there is 2 options (not up to me) first option is a 1996 integra se which I have been asking for years because we already have one just no motor but me and my dad we’re gonna but a b20z2 in it together being the first car project we have ever done which I was really looking forward to. The second option is a 1991 civic Hatchback DX which I like as well (me and dad both agree it needs coil overs though haha) but me and my dad will not be able to work on it together because there is nothing to work on 😢 but I was wondering how much power I could expect from it after building it, I know that with a turbo setup this engine does need a good tune and i am planning on learning how to tune! Thanks for everyone’s help! B20z2 is $450, 1991 civic hatchback DX is $2800

Are you asking how much power from a stock rebuild on a D15B2 engine? 92 horsepower

Or, are you asking how much power from a built D15B2 engine with forced induction? That will depend on a lot of factors, and cannot be answered without more information.

Hell yea good old how much up can I expect thread from people with no car or mechanical experience. The bread and butter of a failed project car by means of biting off more than you can chew. You got no stripes kid. Save that ef from the junkyard. If you have a u can put 10k miles on an ef chassis you’ve earned your first stripe. The last thing that ef will ever need is a set of cheap or great coil overs just a waste of time and money. Get the ef then ten seconds after order the manual for your ef from only helms dot com. Sorry I’m outa sugar.

Update I talked to my dad and decided that we are going to be buying the engine for the Integra! I am very excited, because this will be my first time working on a project with my father which i have been wanting to do for a very long time now. Its nothing major just putting in the engine and replacing the pump for the power steering. But I am looking forward to the the journey of building this car into something that i can daily drive while also making it fast and look good. I have little to no mechanical experience but I am looking forward to learning from my dad, recently I think my dad has realized that despite being a computer nerd I do have a good amount of knowledge, really only about hondas though haha but i get it from him though because I grew up with my dad only ever really having hondas and acuras for cars because thats what he likes. I think the moment he realized that i do have a good amount of knowledge is when he told me he found an engine for the Integra and i asked him what kind of engine, he was a little hesitant to tell me I think worried I wouldnt know what it was but he told me it was a b20 and I asked him if it was a b20b b20b2 or what and he was a little taken back haha, or possibly when I asked him he wanted to get that one instead of the b18b2 that we already had in the garage haha! And if you are wondering why I am sharing so much that really dosent matter it is because I have no friends that are into cars like I am and especially not hondas, and I have a hard time talking to my dad so I really dont have anyone to talk to about this stuff and talking about it makes me really happy so I am using this as an outlet to get it all out, and hopefully get some good tips along the way! thanks for reading have a great day!

Im sorry if I offended you but im still a kid just trying to learn more about this because im passionate about it haha. I also never claimed to have any stripes becuase I dont even have my license yet and this is my first car. also I dont know what you mean by biting off more than i can chew because the car is in great condition and dosent need any work, and what i meant by the coilovers is I think it would look better with them. If actually have something helpful to reply with go for it but if not please dont waste your time.

Enjoy the process. You were asking about power and turbos - I would not recommend boosting the B20 engine due to the thin sleeves. Just install it and run it stock and have a good time. If you still want boost in the future, do a lot of reading up on it and plan to boost another engine that has a better track record with being able to hold it.

thanks for the advice I really appreciate it we have the original motor which is a b18b2 and my dad told me when he first found the b20z2 that when I get used to manual (also learning manual on this car) then we will swap the engine in so I can do more with it, but I am thinking of possibly making the b20z2 v-Tec eventually

I’ll be the most helpful by telling you exactly how your wasting your time. Your welcome.. so heres more helpfulness don’t be fragile its black and white. if ever I’m wrong someone else will step in. Until then remember what I reply here. Get a american b20 or run the risk I getting your car taken away by the state. Do it right or doing twice. There just so happens to be a recent thread on bar’ing a b20.

hey! sorry for bringing up an old reply lol. im looking at getting an ef hatch atm. the one im looking at right now is a 91 dx with a 5 spd, with the motor itself being in questionable condition. do you know of any swaps that would allow me to keep the 5 spd? and if so are there any options with vtech? I know no matter what ill most likely need to grab a new ecu and convert to obd1 from obd0, but i wanted to ask around before just buying something not knowing there was a better path. i was looking at a few b series's but that would ruin my hopes of keeping the manual (budget wise). i am looking to daily it so something that has future potential but also is reliable would be ideal. any info would help! *and if there is a thread already talking about this i appologize as im new to these forums.

You can swap in a complete D16Z6 or D16Y8, keep your D-series manual gearbox, and gain VTEC. You'll need to convert to OBD1.

You sound like a good guy.. I hope the best for your build and soak in the time you get with your dad. I lost mine just before before I got my first car.
I hope when my son is older, he'll be into working on a old honda like I've always love doing. Just finished restoring my turbo'd 89 crx si to near mint/new cond so I'll have something to hand down..
if you get the dx, I would hunt down a cheap complete b18a swap. Something to consider If you did get one and if your up to it, put new piston rings in with a good cylinder honing, clean the valve faces replace the rod bearings with new oem standard size and put it back together for longevity. All easy to do in the garage. You would be much happier with that than putting in a slower d16z6 or y8 (sorry DaX) because they are torqueless. a b20 would probably be only most reliable being n/a.. I would put the b18b back in the Integra. Have 2 fun cars, then down the road you could make your car a LS/Vtec and be loving it.. Heck, even turbo it on low boost and be more way more fun for years to come.
Or just keep it simple with a d series..
