1991 Integra Misaligned Cam Gears
Hi All,
long time member returning after leaving the honda game for the last 10 years. LOL
i was lucky to purchase a 1991 Acura integra with a solid B20/ Trans and clutch for $380.00. After driving her home I replaced the wire harness distributor and focused on the grounding system.
but always seemed to get the dreaded "check engine light code #4". After verifying timing was off. i did a simple R&R on the old timing belt (reused bad mistake) and seemed to have fixed the problem.
while the car worked fine for 2 weeks regressed back to going into Limp mode after a few minutes.
So, after checking electrical was good. Found the Cam gear had regressed back to misaligned to the way when i 1st purchased the car and replaced the timing with a brand new Gates belt.
Great again, solid power and band so after 100 miles or begin going into "safe mode" again. verified timing cam gears have regressed again to misaligned.
So after debating recall the crank pulley did not come with the dowel key and had to replace when doing the belt the 1st time around.
my question, is what could be causing this? I have no problem replacing just dont want to continue experiencing the same issue.
let me know if anybody has any insight and gladly consider any advice.
this is what i plan to replace in the next few weeks.
1. Replace Harmonic balancer
2. verify cam gears have correct notch and not
3. Verify Keys are inside cam gear
4. remove distributor to give more play when adjusting gears (was a pain in the butt with it installed)
5. Replace belt and tensioner... again.
so after looking at the timing again, found cam gears had regressed and misaligned
thanks all

I can't imagine this would ever run without the cam or crank keys. The only way for the cams and crank to become misaligned otherwise is a loose belt. The teeth can jump a slot and it will run like crap. Make sure you rotate the engine the proper direction a full cycle before tightening down the belt tensioner. A new harmonic balancer will do nothing to resolve a misaligned cam.
