B16a obd1 swapped civic won’t rev past 3500 until CEL comes on
So as the title describes I have a 95 civic with a B16a swap, obd1.
I start it up, idles ok until I drive it, take it out of gear and the idle starts fluctuating real low and back to normal up down until it eventually corrects itself.
It won’t rev past 3500 until the Check engine light comes on but the idle has solved itself before the cel comes on so I don’t think it’s related.
Once the CEL comes on it operates normally but seems like it’s running kind of rough.
After I turn it off and turn it back on, engine still completely warmed up, it kicks right back into limp mode not revving past 3500 and the CEL is gone.
My friend who I bought the car from thinks it’s the distributor and I’m thinking it’s the map sensor. If codes are necessary I’ll update the post tomorrow once I fetch them but I just picked up the car today and haven’t had a chance to pull them.
If anyone has any insight or has dealt with a similar problem I’m all ears, I’m going to be doing testing as time goes on but this just seems strange. Most people report being stuck into limp mode not the car working itself out of limp or they just are in limp all the time and there’s an obvious fault.
Thanks in advance and I’ll add more as I find it.
It’s a second hand swap so I can not vouch for the integrity of the wiring what so ever. Just seems strange that the ecu corrects the issue after a bit of driving.

The only code it’s throwing is code 17 for the speed sensor which I already knew. I’m genuinely at a loss and may end up just redoing the wiring all together on this car.
at any cost the simplified question I have is why would the car not go past 3k-3500 until I’ve driven it for a bit
