Been turning wrenches for years, but this is my first paint job ever. I didn't want to invest in a bunch of stuff and have it turn out dumb looking, so I exclusively used aerosol cans... Total cost for everything needed was approx $400. Started with body filler and after sanding down this generic grey primer which was on it when I bought it in 2018, I then applied rubberized undercarriage coating to the bumper trims. Cleaned the overspray with goo-off. I then three coats of Krylon rust tough red primer, three coats of Rust-Oleum painters touch white sealer, four coats of Krylon rust tough sunburst yellow, and three coats of spraymaxx 2k clear. Sand, wash and tack in between. Total time from jackstands to finish took me four months lol. (One day a week for 4-6 hours) It needs to cure for 30 days before wet sanding, wash, wax, and buffing. Still have to do the hood and fenders.
I wanted to post pictures of this genuine rattle can job so you fools can bear witness to the results...
For your health. I know about that spraymax and alot of people use it successfully. I'm hesitant to use it tho because of the isocyanates. You won't get the asthma right away, it'll take alot of exposure but lol I'm trying to stay away completely. Maybe I'm being overcautious. They say it goes through any kind of filter and goes through your skin so you need to wear a full suit and have forced air. $$$

Yeah, I was only worried enough to use a respirator and goggles... I chain smoke cigarettes, and caught covid twice in the last year so I'm not exactly worried about asthma lol... I'd imagine if I was painting cars for a living, it would be a greater concern, but my total exposure to the iso fumes was about 20 minutes (three coats 5 minutes apart) I can't imagine painting a car without some type of hard clear to protect all that work. I mean, hands down, this paint job was the toughest car related work I've ever done. On multiple occasions, I wanted to abandon the job and shell out the cash to have the professionals finish it... Glad I saw it through.
Yeah man good job. From the pics it looks great. I did some painting too and it came out awesome at first but I used all lacquer so it ended up yellowing. It was frost white. That was the first paint job with Duplicolor perfect match and I believe Duplicolor clear. Second time I did my trunk with Rustoleum clear lacquer and It has held up alot better but still yellowed a little. I'm still trying to find a non iso alternative that works good. Here is the original that yellowed. Here is the 2nd where I sprayed the trunklid and wing. It's held up better.
I want to keep the original white color. Then everything matches easily like the door jambs, engine bay...I like white too. It's just less work. I think best is to fix the wheel well rust with welding then do a full body paint by a pro. Maybe Maaco single or dual stage poly? Definitely not the cheapest enamel. That is garbage and will fade like within a year.
that Spraymax 2K clear is really good stuff! That looks like a lot of damage, what happened?
It def is great stuff... Highly toxic though. Use a tanked respirator not a painters mask, because it will go through the filters.
Two separate accidents. First one to the passengers side was a T-bone. Old guy was texting and hit me at like 20mph... Second one was me jumping a curb in the rain and I hit a small boulder.
Look on the bright side, all that spray can stuff is light years better than any water base paint there is. The 2K clear is what protects it from things like Gas spills etc. You did a great job too bad about the wreck though.
