2003 CR-V Intermititent Starting Problems
Hello all, I have a 2003 CR-V with 179,000 miles that has been having some issues.
History: Since purchase in august of 2019, I have routinely changed the oil, got new tires, changed all air filters, and put a new battery in it. As for CarFax (which i know can have gaps of reporting) was 2012 when the spark plugs and Drive belts were replaced at 118,950 miles, but that's about it.
Symptoms: The thing I am concerned about is the intermittent starting issues. This has been an ongoing problem, and there isn't really a way to duplicate it reliably. The best way to describe the problem is that it cranks, then towards the point of when it would usually start up flawlessly, the cranking continues, slows and gets weaker until it stops all together. It is NOT a No crank + No start, AND it does not start then die shortly after, but rather when this issue occurs, it does not have the power to start/ crank over all the way Typically it takes 3-7 times of cranking and letting off and attempting to crank again, then it finally starts up. But I recently drove 1500 miles from WA to AZ and the problem occurred 2 times along the whole time, out of the numerous stops and starts I took. With that being said, I would have imagined if the fuel pump was that weak, it would have died by now, or the problem would have at least gotten more consistent, but it hasn't.. Today, however, I decided to prime the fuel pump 2 times before trying again and it started right back up, when usually there would be more instances of just cranking, then eventual start. Just because I was so puzzled by this behavior, I shut it off, and restarted it about 10 times and started up flawlessly each time after that.
Things i have tried/tested: I had a battery CCA/CA test done about a week ago and it was good, and the alternator test showed good. My first theory was that it was a weak fuel pump, or slow to rise fuel pressure, but I would imagine it would have been more frequent. I checked battery voltage and it was at 13.1V, visually inspected the obvious grounds, though I did not dig further in to inspect main engine grounds. If anyone has any ideas, I would be very very grateful! I do have a P0325 code that has predated this issue by about a year, so i dont think that it's too related. Any ideas would be wonderful! Thank you in advance!
