Default Ignition Timing

I have a 93 accord anniversary edition and I’m having an issue with adjusting the ignition timing. I will get the car to operating temperature, set the jumper so that the check engine light comes on and then I try to adjust the distributor for the timing. I set the timing light to 15 degrees per the manual yet I can’t get the red timing mark to show up, not to mention when I set the timing light to 0 I have to advance the distributor as far as it will go in order to hit the red mark. The car still seems to have issues with shifting bc of the timing after this. First question is, should the distributor actually be set to the middle normally to be all set? I have heard that if you have to advance or retard your distributor as far as it will go, that this isn’t normal and something else is a problem. Apologies for the vague description but I’m just lost as what could be the issue with setting the timing. My idle seems to be within the normal range that Honda recommends per the repair manual if that helps. Any assistance would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
