Default When Is It Proper Time to Replace My Vehicle’s Spring?

The springs are designed to keep your vehicle stable on uneven road. Typically, they can last a long time even in a lifetime of a vehicle, but it doesn’t mean that springs would not wear or wear out. If springs lost their resilience or broken, driving quality or safety would suffer. There are three main types of springs: coil springs, leaf springs, and torsion bar springs. In this article, we will tell you how to recognize symptoms and when to replace them.

Coil Spring

As coil springs age, they are more likely to cause a drop in ride height. For example, when several passengers in the back seat, the vehicle will drop down a lot because of sagging or coil springs. In some cases, a worn spring can sag quickly under load when vehicle is empty because it lost the ability to carry weight. Dips in the road now cause the vehicle “bottom out” because the suspension hits the bump stops. In the worst scenario, oil pans, transmission pans, and other low-lying mechanical components can suffer damage.

Leaf Spring

Leaf springs typically can be found in vehicles with solid axles such as pickups, SUVs, and vans. Similarly, they are just like coil springs, they will sag once they are weaker. When you driving your vehicle and you feel like the ride height is uneven or low around, please measure the vehicle’s ride height and compare it with manufacturer’s specifications.

Torsion Bar Spring

Torsion bars are normally installed horizontally in a front-to-rear position on a vehicle, and it takes up less space than coil or leaf springs do. If you hear a metal-on-metal noise, the reason behind this is the rubber cross member mounts have dried up and crumbled away. In some cases, you can check the torsion bar to make sure if there any cracks. If you can not see the all sides of the bar, use your hands and touch over them so you may feel some rust patches that are very rough.
