B20b budget build recommendations for my Honda Civic Del Sol!
Hi everyone, I'm Dorian! Pretty new to honda-tech, so I just wanted to introduce myself.
I'm from the NoVA area, about 15 minutes out from Washington D.C. (depending on traffic lol). I just got a turbo Del Sol about 2 months ago with a Turbo D16z6, street tuned by the previous owner. It was my first time owning a turbo car and a car with aftermarket fuel management (Hondata S300 v3), and the previous owner told me he had a tune on it but to make sure to get it dynoed soon. I, being inexperienced, (my rationale was that he obviously knew more than me) left his tune alone and dailyed it like that until I was gonna take it to a shop to have it dyno tuned. Then one day about 2-3 weeks ago, my turbo starts making a very funny noise, and it's barely building boost. The previous owner said he had 3 psi on an EMUSA external wastegate (T3/T3 turbo), and if I floored it at any gear in mid to high RPM, it would usually spool up pretty quickly (under 2 seconds) and hold 3 psi, 4 if I was at WOT. So my turbo would only spool up about half way (1-2 lbs) and then if I held my foot on the throttle for long enough, it would spool up to full boost but I had to push the engine very hard to do so. So I take the car up to a ship of a friend's in Frederick MD, and he told me to come back the next week to get it tuned. On my way home I hear a very distressing noise coming from the turbo followed by the worst and most horrific knocking I had ever heard in my life. It was there that I knew the motor was toast. So moral of the story, GET ANY BOOSTED CAR YOU BUY TUNED ASAP AND DONT BE AN IDIOT LIKE ME AND DAILY IT FOR A MONTH.
So I would've been out of a car for several months while I saved up the money to do a motor swap if it wasn't for the lucky fact that I sold my CG Accord for 2k about a day ago. So I bought a GSR transmission online ($989 total including shipping and tax), B series shift linkages from a GSR integra ($149.99) ACT heavy duty clutch kit ($416.50), and I'm planning on getting a B20b from the junkyard tomorrow, expecting it to be around $400, also getting a cast-iron turbo manifold for around $75. I know ramhorns are better for flow but again, this a budget build and I'm tryna do as cheap as reliable possible lol. Do y'all think this can be a good and reliable turbo build for a daily. I'm obviously aware that any problem that the motor I get has will be exacerbated by boost, but the junkyard has a 30 day guarantee on motors. Is there anything else y'all would recommend with this?

Most reading on turboing these motors I've found the need for a conservative amount of boost with a tune. If you stay under 350 range you'll be fine on a stock block with forged internals. I'd say at least have the block decked and head milled a tiny bit. And the usual oem parts replaced while.the motor is on a stand.
