Hi,
New member on this forum (the Swedish Honda forums are not very active), so I hope we have some good EP3 mechanics in here.
We have a 2001 Honda EP3 Type-R that we use for 8-24 hour races. Pretty stock exept from coilovers and new arbs.
During our last race it become harder and harder to get the gear in place (mostly between 3:rd och 4:th) and suddenly it was stuck in fourth gear.
The transmission had before made razzling noises when shifting.
We opened up the gearbox and the "fork" between 3 and 4 was broken.
Also I noticed that the "sleeve/skirt" was pretty hard to move around 3 and 4.
Q1: What parts do think I have to change? Brands?
Q2: Any suggestion of a good webshop in Europe? (I guess ordering from the UK these days are way to expensive)
Q3: Maybe install a new diff while the gearbox is apart? Recommendations?
Q4: New clutch? (Maybe a new flywheel) Recommendations?
Q5: If you would recommend any upgrade to make the car go faster - what would you recommend? (Engine swap or turbo is not allowed - hard regulations concerning sound/noise.
A1: Besides the shift fork, your pictures are too small, so hard to tell what else may have issues, but it looks like your 3/4 hub and sleeve may need to be replaced. I close look at the synchros would also be wise. OEM Honda or Synchrotech.
A2: No clue who to send you to in Europe.
A3: We run an OEM Honda helical diff in our k-swapped EG hatch endurance car. It has been fantastic on dry and wet tracks. I would recommend a helical diff from Honda, Quaife, or M-Factory. Others will probably recommend a plate LSD.
A4: We are running a stock Acura TSX clutch (AP, made in England). If we need a new clutch, I think the Exedy OE style or stage 1. Exedy light weight steel flywheel.
A5: Without knowing what your rule book allows, it is hard to make any recommendations.
RA1 - RA4: Seems like All4Honda in Netherlands has all the parts needed.
RA5: The rules are:
- The motor should be the same as supposed to be in the original car (cant swap/modify to a K24 for example).
- No turbo, NOS or overcharging.
- Max 85 db - we are running with the stock "air-in-take-box".
Besides from that - free trimming.
So I was wonder - whats the best gain and easiest mods to get the max out of the motor for a reasonable amount of money?
If your rules are open with what can be done to your engine, you have cams, head porting, higher compression pistons, intake manifold, exhaust, throttle body, etc....
But with an 85 db max, almost anything you do can have the potential to make it louder, but you can always add insulation around your intake and run additional/larger resonators and or mufflers.
