Default 1982 CB250RS problems

Hi guys. I've had a 1982 Honda CB250RS Deluxe for about 3 weeks. 76000km on the clock. It's always been a little difficult to start, and died on idle until warmed up by riding for a couple of minutes. I commute 10km or 20mins to work everyday on it and was working nights this week. On getting home on Friday morning it died while riding up the driveway in 1st gear. Extremely lucky that it died when it did. It just cut out and wouldn't start after.

There is fuel in the tank.
The headlight and other lights are as bright as they ever were.
On kickstarting, it sounds like it's almost starting but not quite taking.
I tried leaving it for a while and various choke positions, throttle positions etc and still the same result.

I have no experience with bike maintenance and my previous bikes have all been fairly new bikes.
I can do simple things like a spark plug or oil change with some youtube/forum support, but that's about my limit.

I realise I might have to get a mobile mechanic to have a look at it and get it started to take it to a garage. But I'd like to have a go at fixing it myself and commute by train in the meantime. I'm also looking at buying a classic Civic (see my other thread I've just started).

Any advice or suggestions as to what may be wrong and what I should do are greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.
