JDM ITR Pistons + GSR Rods vs. Forged Internals
I'm currently trying to figure out the best way to build up the bottom end and raise the compression on my B18C1 for when I find Buddy Club Spec III+ cams. I've read that a pretty cost effective way to bump up the compression is to get JDM Integra Type R 11.1:1 pistons (I think with a GSR head and stock head gasket the compression is bumped up to 11.3?) and use OEM rods. And unless the condition of the cylinder walls is less than ideal, the block won't need any major machine work. However, I'm just curious if there's any justifiable benefit to go fully forged with something like JE pistons and Eagle H-beams? I beat on my car pretty hard, and occasionally I'm staying pretty high up in the rev range on twisty mountain roads. Will ITR pistons and stock GSR rods be reliable for this application and daily use? Or would it be worth it to shell out the money for forged internals even if this NA build is pretty mild? I also wonder if it's easier to install just ITR pistons instead of getting new rod bolts, bearings, etc. because I know next to nothing about the complexities of crankshaft clearances and whatnot.
I would say that you are fine with GSR rods and ITR pistons, strong suggestion that you upgrade rod bolts with ARP stuff. Rod bolts are in high stress when you are staying in the high rev range.
edit. You should weight the price when you think that changing rod bolts you need to bring the rods to a machine shop so they can make sure your big end is still round when you have ARP bolts torqued.
