Default Revs being limited? (Auto 01 EX)

So I have this really weird issue and I’m pretty sure it’s an issue with my trans fluid or solenoids. My car will drive fine for about half a drive and then out of nowhere when I have to press on the gas it’ll start limiting and bouncing off at 4k rpm. Then when I press on the gas it has an seemingly almost scratchy feeling and loss of power. It’ll do this until the end of my drive then once I turn the car back on my revs will no longer be limited. Some things I’ve thought of is it’ll happen if I accidently shift into D3 but it’s hard to replicate so no clue. I’ve also turned off cruise control and it’ll still happen so no clue there either.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated and I’m pretty mechanically inclined and not afraid to get dirty to fix whatever issue. Thanks.

I know thats about the limit when your vtec solenoid goes bad. Have had same experience across multiple vtec equipped cars (My accord, neighbors crv, g/fs crv lol). As soon as vtec goes to engage its like a hard limit, will just peg off it. Maybe your solenoid just starting to go bad but not constant yet

Agreed, I think that's the "limp home mode" that's happening, which should mean it's a VTEC Solenoid issue. It could be that you have enough of a leak back there it won't work right, or the solenoid itself is dead (or going bad in this case). It's probably the first thing I would check and clean up back there. At least have a gasket replacement ready if you want to try that first, or pick up another solenoid (They are between $40-60 for the solenoid and $5 for the gasket). Also doublecheck any wires and connectors to see if they are worn, if an exposed wire is there it could also create a weird issue. It's not the hardest thing to do, but you do have to take a few things apart to get to it. Luckily, it's all normal bolts and sizes.

Here's a video to show you where and how to take it off.
