Default 95 Auto Civic EX Tranny Issues...

The car belongs to a friend, he says when its been driven for a long period of time the car wont go anywhere in any gear, its auto. He dropped it off at my house, I drove it around for a bit and it was fine then it would hesitate to shift, he said that it would jerk at times, I'm thinking its time to swap it out...any input would be great

i have a 97 Civic Ex Auto and it has the same problems. It hesitates to shift sometimes, which is why imgetting shitty gas mileage (15-18). I can be driving normally and my RPM's will go to 4k or above just getting to 40mph, and even if i push less on the gas it will still go to the same RPM's. Sometimes it shifts fine but most of the time it hesitates. My mechanic said there is a piece inside the tranny that will cause it to do that and I could have it looked at and maybe replaced but im not sure what im going to do about it.

yea sometimes mine will do that, but most of the time the tac will just get into 4k+ and then it will shift down, it doesnt usually have a problem getting to 4th just out of first and 2nd. It really doesnt like to get out of 2nd lol. And your going to swap it with another auto? how much does that cost because i might be interested if I end up keeping the car.

Every '95 i've seen that was an automatic shifted poorly. For that one year honda used the A24A transmission. '92 - '94 used the M24A and they seem to work much better. '96 - '00 shift funny but thats more of a design flaw from what I understand than an auctual problem that you can fix.

oh really? So all of them are crap lol? Then that doesnt explain why I'm getting shitty gas mileage. Any ideas on my gas mileage then? I already used a bunch of Injector cleaner, changed oil, put in new spark plugs, put on a short air ram, changed fuel filter, and changed radiator fluid (because the car was overheating) and put a new radiator cap on it (the cap was bad causing fluid to seep out or evaporate causing overheating).

Your mileage issue could be something as simple as a plugged PCV valve (the PCV valve should rattle, if it doesn't or it doesn't its bad). There are a couple of TSBs on the '96 - '00 one of which involves replacing the linear solenoid, but from what i've been reading it rarely fixes the problem with harsh shifting. Remember you will get noticeably poorer mileage with an automatic civic than you would with its manual counterpart, though it shouldn't be as bad as yours.

Yes i know about the solenoid in the tranny as my mechanic cited that part when he took it for a test drive. He said that I could take it to a transmission shop and have them look at it but that could be the problem. As far as the PCV valve, where is that and how can I check it?

The PCV valve is located under the intake manifold one end has a vacuum line connected to it and the other end goes into the back of what honda calls a breather chamber. This link http://www.hondaautomotivepart...82%29 has a nice exploded diagram that should aid you in finding the PCV valve. To check it take it out and shake it, it should click. If it doesn't buy a new one.

thanks alot man, I really hope this is whats wrong with it. If my car got better gas mileage it would offset the fact that its so damn slow lol. It just really sucks when the car is slow as [freak] and gets horrible gas mileage. I cant wait to get a 5spd, this will be the last auto i ever buy lol.

Honda's are much, much more fun to drive as 5 speeds. They have some of the slickest manual transmissions out there, even base model civics that aren't fast are still fun to drive with a manual tranny.
