Default 1998 Civic LX VSS Sensor Problem

I’ve recently been having a more intermittent problem with my speedometer not working and decided to replace the speed sensor. Upon removing the pigtail, I saw it has quite a lot of corrosion, so I decided to replace the pigtail first. The Dorman one I found is part number 645-916, but it does not snap in to my sensor. Comparing them, the top half of the where the pins are is open on my sensor, where as they are closed on the new pigtail.

Now the transmission will not even go into overdrive while cruising after I inspected the pigtail and plugged it back in until I found a new one. Could anyone point me to where I could find the correct pigtail specifically for my car?

You have it but the white cover that is still in the new connector is still sitting in the VSS on the transmission, preventing you from connecting the new connector. You can see it's clearly missing from your old connector. That tells me it stayed in the VSS instead of staying with the plug like it is supposed to.

I've seen this happen a couple of times when doing engine swaps. Most annoying.

Wow you’re completely right. The old pigtail piece is black and looks like it’s a part of the sensor. Thanks a lot for the help
