Default Civic 1996 Clutch housing broken

Hello,

Ive bought from ebay a S40 tranny . But the clutch housing/block came broken. More precisely the slave cylinder support is broken which put the clutch open to the air.

I currently also own a S40 tranny in my car which body is in perfect condition. Are clutch housing/block swappable since they originate from same type.

If so, will the different wear from the bodies be a problem ?

Thank you

Yes, it should be swappable, however if you swap the bell housing you need to check the thrust clearance on the differential and mainshaft.

Thank you for answering. Im already checking these topics thanks to you.
Why is checking these clearance important in the case of swapping the bell housing ?
Thanks

Because when the transmission was originally assembled, shims were chosen for the differential and mainshaft bearings to accommodate the specific case and bellhousing. By changing the bellhousing, the machined surfaces on the new bellhousing may be in a slightly different position than the original bellhousing due to the nature of aluminum castings. Checking the clearances will tell you if you are OK with the existing shims or if you need to change them to a thicker or thinner shim.

Just to expand a touch on what DaX was saying. Either half of the transmission cases from the same model case can be swapped. However it requires to do all the measurements for the shims used in the transmission, regardless of which half is being swapped.

Thanks this is very valuable information to me.

I cant seem to find these shims in transmission rebuild kits. nor in standards automotive websites sellings parts.

I imagine they are available in OEM at Honda. Are they generally expensive ?

Also is this type of work common work for your average mechanic ? Or is this highly specialised work.?

Thanks

Shims come from Honda. The aren't terribly expensive. You could call someplace like Synchrotech and see if they have any also. You need some specialized tools to check the mainshaft end play. It's all laid out in the service manual. I don't know if I would trust any old mechanic to do this correctly, which is why I do my own. There are a few places that specialize in Honda transmissions though, like Synchrotech, Tall Pines Racing, and Whoopee Doo Racing.
