Default 89 Civic SI Speedometer Cable Removed

I recently bought an 89 SI OBD0 to race and getting it ready to take to the track for the first time and I noticed the speedo cable is broke on the transmission connection. Is it required? I remember in the OBD1 95 civic models it would shut off if the speedo wasn't registering.

The car will run without it but you will have a check engine light for the VSS.
