Default Another desperate Ek97 immobilizer issue

Hi all an thank you for reading this.

Let me just say I did search the forums a lot before posting!

Last November my mom's civic started the green flashing light.

Back then I figured out that if I had the key close to the immo ring the car did start normally so I taped one key in the ring and put it under the steering column and started the car with the other.

Covid and work issues kept us from finding a permanent solution and now the flashing green key came up again.

The car is miles away from workshops so I took the keys along with the hli module and the key ring to a locksmith who told me that the keys had to be reprogrammed to the code of the module. So he did and after a 2 hour drive I put everything back on hoping that the flashing key would go away but no.. it is still there.

And so here I am, having a disabled car on a mountain village asking my self how the heck they steal cars in a flash...

Any help or info or points whould be highly appreciated.

Ps.

Checked the fuses,
Checked the battery
Checked for loose cables
Checked for broken cables
Did crank the car by looping two cables but did not fire.

Thanks for reading..

6th generation USDM Civics don't have immobilizers. Where in the world are located?

The car is in Europe! And 97 models here have immobilizers!

I do not doubt the existence of an immobilizer in EK Civics. However, a European Civic forum may be a better place for your query.

There is a thread somewhere on here with a European 2000 with an imobilizer. Something to do with a missing extra wire on his junkyard ignition switch . Op, if you find a resolution could you please update the thread?

You may be able to contact someone in the UK such as DocTronic:

Doctronic - smart solutions - Mobilizer-A0

They sell immobilizer bypass chips.

It's likely the ignition module. Had the same issue with my '99 Integra GS, green flashing key on the gauge cluster. When you remove the steering column cover, you will see it. It "wraps around" the ignition. Grab one from a '99-02 Acura TL or '98-01 Accord... from a local salvage yard. It's the same part and plugs right up.

Well I've tried with 2 of those. Can't believe both are off.

A small update, today after reading almost everything on the net I had a small breakthrough.

At first I should say that the 2000+ pages workshop manual has not a single photo or diagram of the hli 502 module.

Having said that I got a multimeter and started trial and error. You see there are 3 hot wires going in and then there is one that sends the pulse to the dials green light indicator. That leaves us with 4 dead wires, propably grounds or triggers. Bridging them in pairs I managed to cranck the engine and after some trials I even started the car!

So I thought that's it, I did it and then off the engine and again on and it started again!

And that's just about it. The cat didn't start again and I got back to square one.....

My oh my... I still can't understand what is going on.

Would you hunt for chickens at a duck pond?

HT is a fine Honda forum, but sometimes the best advice one can give is to send a poster to forums where the expertise is stronger for a specialized topic.

My suggestion is to purchase a factory service manual for the European model from your local ebay.

Honda should have distributed genuine honda repair manuals for your vehicle, which should have found their way into the second hand market. Sometimes in the united States people who sell books will come across them and list them for cheap on eBay

The other option is less likely, dealerships here have the capacity to view the factory service manual in their database. You could call a local honda dealer with a parts department to ask for the part number and price for a new immobolizer and ask if there are any diagrams that show its location

To clarify do not search ebay listings in the united States. You need to shop ebay for europe for their local listings.

R-motion is in the U.K and dismantles performance Honda’s. Maybe they could help answer your question or direct you to someone who can ? Good luck !

If I remember correctly, the mom's civic came with a red programming key. If she doesn't have that then the dealership will have to be involved.

Op there’s an old thread about your situation. Doesn’t seem that it was resolved but it does seem posters identified the Immobilizer as a culprit which I don’t think was ever done .

This appears to be the same unit you have.

Without a red programming key that is matched to the immobilizer unit you are up a creek. Recommend either a bypass chip or a USDM ECU that does not have the immobilizer function. With the USDM ECU you will probably still need to jump the power for the fuel pump at the immobilizer unit just like the USDM 97-01 Preludes. Honda ditched the Type 1 immobilizers quick fast and in a hurry once they figured out no one could keep track of the red keys.

But also triple check your battery and connections to the battery. Had a weak battery trigger what looked like an immobilizer issue on a 97 Prelude. Had enough charge to light up the dash but the the immobilizer light was flashing. New fully charged battery resolved the issue.
