'99 V6 Valve Cover Gasket and Tune Up
1999 Honda Accord EX V6, 150K
So I've spent roughly about $300 in parts for a valve cover gasket and tune up. I was gonna do it myself but after working on my motorcycle, I realize the time investment for hobby work is. So after speaking with a few mechanics, one mechanic says he will do the valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor and distributor o-ring for $400.
I like the labor price considering how little gasket work I will be doing (the other stuff I can do but if I'm not working the gasket might as well allow the mechanic take care of it).
In any case, the mechanic also noted that I have all the parts but if he has to remove the intake components of the engine to get to the valve covers, then he suggests that I replace the intake gasket as part of the job. This is the first mechanic that mentioned the intake's gasket change, not sure if the other mechanics mentioned it or glossed over that potential fact for valve cover gasket jobs.
Is this typical of this job?
P.S.
I don't think he will be asking extra for the labor. He penned down $400 on his schedule for the entire job and said out loud all the work he will do but can't remember if he mentioned intake gasket as part of the job. I imagine it won't be more than $50 addn'l labor if he does the intake gasket if it comes to it though, so long as I provide the parts. If he has to provide any of the parts, I have to pay tax on the entire job otherwise he is going to let me get away with it tax free. What do you guys think?

My opinion is save the $400 and do it yourself, it's just not that hard, especially things like wires and spark plugs, those literally take a few minutes each.
But, of course, as you said, your time might be more valuable. I didn't think intake gaskets were a problem, but I don't have a v6 so it could be just something I didn't realize needed to be done at times.
