Wrap it in duct tape first, one layer, then cut it with a high rpm wheel cutter. It's a pain in the ***, but I've gotten SOMEWHAT better at it since making my oil return 3 different times.

I had a really tough time with those trying various methods and following various instructions.

Only thing I could get to work is to use a fine, new, high-speed cut-off saw (like air powered). Wrap the braid tightly with masking tape (if you use electrical or other types of tape they will often stretch.

Put it in a clamp and cut quickly... leave one layer of tape on the hose when you are putting it into the fitting, follow the instructions, use lubricant. Should be pretty easy once you get a decent cut.

Yeah man, tons of masking tape, cut it with an air cut off tool and use oil when putting it in the fitting.....you can usually dtermine which end is the raggiest (sp) and put that part in first, then squeeze the hose and the apply pressure the whole time and twist it in....it takes awhile to get it. Count how many times you poke your fingertips.

all good tips above. i just wrap masking tape as tightly as possible and then cut it with my dremel.
as for getting the hose into the fitting, even with oil i usually had trouble (no vice). so i would just grab the braided hose tightly and then force the face of the fitting down against my bench using my weight to get it in. works for me

leave a single layer of tape on the hose after you cut it when you push the fitting on. This keeps the braid tight. Then once you get the fitting on about an eighth of an inch peel off the tape and force the fitting on the rest of the way. No finger pokes, no vice needed, works every time for me.

You don't even really have to take the tape off at all as long as its not too thick. I have found that you can put the fitting in a vise and push on the hose and use a screwdriver to push in the pieces of the braid that won't quite go in on their own.
