VTEC Solenoid/ Check Engine light
Hello guys I’m new to this forum and my car knowledge is very minimal, I have a question. I just bought a 2000 civic ex, but the engine was swapped and has a y7. So I have a Check engine light for the vtec solenoid, how do I go about solving the light issue? And I obviously don’t need to replace the solenoid if there isn’t a vtec engine, right?
Ok. Thank you. Would you consider this a big deal? And when I drive and feels like the vtec is supposed to “kick in” it like hesitates (if that’s the right word), anyway to solve that problem as well?
Do you have to pass emissions or an inspection? If not, you could just deal with having the CEL on constantly and drive the car. Since the ECU is not detecting the VTEC solenoid, it will not try to switch over to the VTEC fuel or timing maps. It will stay in the low cam map. The ECU is not "tuned" for a Y7, so while it will work, it is not ideal. This may be related to the reason you are feeling hesitation, but that hesitation has nothing to do with the engine trying to go into VTEC. Ideally you would either switch to the correct engine (D16Y8) or switch to the correct ECU (P06...this would require an OBD2 to OBD1 conversion harness).
Find a P2E ECU and plug it in. They are not in high demand and therefore, will not be very expensive. The appropriate part number is 37820-P2E-A12.
