1992 Accord
hello folks i recently purchased an accord and it has the typical 240k plus mile problems. The main ones i am worried about or having issues diagnosing are my speedometer, ive checked all 3 wires and they are 5v on red, 12v on yellow, and ground is testing good. Removed VSS and found that the shaft was missing so i installed a new sensor with new shaft but still no reading on the dash. The fuse for the cluster is also good so at this point im thinking its the dash itself. I am also having an issue with my coolant temp not reading either, my cooling fans are coming on so its reading temp from one of the sensors. Tried a new sensor and still no luck with the dash reading like it should. I found a car but its an auto, will i be able to either swap the cluster parts from auto to my car or will the cluster itself work with it being a manual car. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Likely is burned up capacitors on the cluster circuit board. On 90-93 (and perhaps other years) several capacitors burn up after about 150,000 miles and disable various gauges. Only fix is to pull the cluster and try to spot the burned ones and remove and replace them. A person who is handy with soldering iron and likes messing with those printed circuit boards should be able to pull out the bad ones and solder in replacements, assuming there is no major damage to the pcb itself. But the repairman should also be able to trace things and find any breaks. A jump wire can be soldered in to bridge any breaks. You get that kind of stuff done when you have an old car that parts are scarcer and scarcer for.
You should get the cluster for your car if you seek out a used one. Don't try to swap in the automatic one. If you pull your cluster, only take it apart far enough to see the circuit board on both sides. Note which screws are which. They are different lengths for a reason. Unless you know what you're doing, don't take off any gauges. They are precision installed and very difficult to put back properly. If it is your cluster, the problem is going to be found in the burned capacitor(s). Once you spot it, and find someone to work on it, have them replace all of the capacitors like the ones that have burned.
