Post Gas Gage Stuck At Full

What up everyone, so my gas gage is stuck at full. I took out the cluster and took the clear plastic shield and while the cluster was still connected and car was off I tried to push the gas needle all the way to E ( Empty) and it would slowly climb up by its self. my car is a 98 Ek hatch. I know this is a relatively easy fix but I've never worked on cars as far as oil changes and changing of a tier. This is my first build. Any help would be much appreciated.

underneath the rear seat there is a cover that removed the fuel pump and gauge sending unit check on that. make sure to disconnect battery and ground car fist. and obviously well vented area no smoking you'll be opening the fuel tank.

On the '98 EK Hatch chassis, the fuel gauge sending unit in the tank is not accessible from the same place as the fuel pump assembly is. You will have to pull the fuel tank down out of the car to reach the cap where the gauge sending unit is located.

You can try pulling the gas gauge from a donor cluster and swap them to see if it works correctly I had to do this for my MPH gauge, luckily I was able to further detach the electrical circuit board and swap it on mine so I was able to keep the same mileage.

Original parts on a 22 year old car will eventually start to go bad and give you these headaches. I would most definitely look into the fuel gauge sending unit that JRCivic1 has mentioned. Maybe the leveling arm is stuck in the up position causing the fuel gauge to always read full.

Has this always been an issue or did you just a do a rebuild of some sort and you noticed this after it was all put back together?

Unplug the fuel sending unit connector, and then turn key to ON(II). Does the fuel gauge needle now drop to empty?
