Default 01 Civic transmission issues

Hey Guys,

First post here. I've had my civic (automatic transmission) for about a year now. When I first bought it, sometimes I noticed the shifting was a bit abrupt - the revs would climb higher than expected, and then when it did finally shift it wasn't smooth. It wasn't too much of a problem until one day the check engine light came on after it had been slipping pretty badly - it felt like I was driving a stick shift with the clutch halfway engaged.

I did multiple flushes of the tranny fluid and that made a huge difference. The problem was basically non-existent for a few months after that. Recently, it started acting up again, and then I took it on a long drive up a fairly steep and windy road into the mountains and it got to the point where it would not move at all - I'd put my foot on the gas and the engine would rev but it wouldn't move an inch. I switched to reverse and still the same problem.

The fault codes are as follows:
P0730 - Gear Ratio incorrect
P0740 - Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit open

Now, I can drive the car, but only at very low speeds.

What do you think - is it toast? Or is there something potentially simple that I could troubleshoot?
It has 193K on the ODO.

Internal ATF filter may be clogged with clutch debris restricting flow to operate trans. Unfortunately those 2 codes are usually the death codes for a honda trans.

I feel your pain. I had an 01 Honda Odyssey that crapped its trans. My code was P0780. I did many drain and fills of Honda ATF, added an external ATF filter and changed all the solenoid valves and it still crapped out on me. I limped it in to a Hyundai dealer and traded it in for $2K.

2K is great! Though I guess it depends on when that was. I would be thrilled with that but don't think I'd be able to get that much.

Anyone else have any suggestions? I'd hate to send it to a scrap yard but fear that might be the only option, aside from replacing the transmission which I don't think would be worth it.

Keeping that civic depends on the mileage and condition of the under carriage , in my area people will buy those hondas for parts , you won't get $2,000 unless you trade it in . Basically you're not really getting $2,000 because it's worked into the deal . And with a hyandai it's a P.O.S. anyways . The owners manual will say use honda ATF only so that may have something to do with it , I think they're good cars but I do my own work , I'd buy new if they didn't have tech over kill , it's just more things that can go wrong ..
