It is normal. The air comes from 2 different things:
- Positive Crankcase Ventialtion system
- Generated by the valvetrain movement
Blowby goes downward into the crankcase, not up into the head.

blow-by gases does go into the crankcase but also goes up to the head through the oil drain passages if there is excessive amounts of blow-by
