Default B16 engine rebuild estimate for turbocharged use

So I’m trying to get a b16 rebuilt for a little boost. I got a quote back and I think the dude is super high...

$3500, forged rods, pistons, bearings. Upgraded oil pump,
$600 Engine will need to be balanced also.
$3500 Cylinder head assembly, valves, springs, retainers, and camshafts. Head gasket, head studs.
$1200-timing belt, water pump and idler and tensioner bearings and seals

None of these items include labor, on a average build you estimated labor $1300 for labor build.

There is also machine work that needs to be done $1200. Hone the cylinders and perform cylinder resurface, pressure check, replacing valve guides, spring and retainers.

what would be a reasonable price to you?

Run... Run far, run fast... Just run..
Where you located? There are places that would do all that for half the total price, labor included..

Put together a shopping cart on summitracing.com to estimate your piston and rod costs. They have all your ARP headstuds and rod bolts too. Water pump and timing belt kit can be found either on rockauto.com or even amazon.

Knowledge never goes bad. Do some research on the best parts for your power goals and read about what other successful builders used and gather together the parts you want to use specifically. You could also look around for a pre-built.

I figured it would cost me like 5k to have it all rebuilt. What is a good price in your opinion?

I mean, $3.5K-4K at a reputable engine building shop sounds like a good starting point to me. Low compression pistons with rings are about $500 a set, H-beam rods are about $600 for 4. As long as the crank is still in good condition, no need to replace it. Clevite bearings are like $120 for a full bottom end kit. ARP headstuds and rod bolts are like $140 for the kit. A good MLS headgasket is like $80. Timing belt and water pump kit is like $140. Front and rear main seals are like $30. That's about it for bottom end, so you're at like $1800. Labor to hone the cylinders and deck the block and head flat and assemble everything to tight tolerances shouldn't run you more than $1200. Call around and get some quotes for what you have in mind. It's like getting a bid for a bathroom remodel, make those shops battle for your business.

OP just stated he is looking for 300whp.. Not some *****-out drag machine or time attack vehicle.. This is about as basic as builds get; and the price he posted is ABSOLUTELY ABSURD for what he is wanting, reputable shop or not. That's well over 10,000 dollars (with labor). No.. *******.. Way.. I don't care if you're Dale Earnhardt, Ken Block, Danica Patrick.. I'm not paying that.. lol

$3500, forged rods, pistons, bearings. Upgraded oil pump, Estimate $1,500 in parts on the bottom end.
$600 Engine will need to be balanced also. Crank/piston/rod balance is about $300, full rotating assembly (add flywheel, pressure plate, and crank pulley) is about $400.
$3500 Cylinder head assembly, valves, springs, retainers, and camshafts. Head gasket, head studs. Estimate $250 for head assembly/machine work and maybe around $1,000 for parts
$1200-timing belt, water pump and idler and tensioner bearings and seals Estimate $300 for timing belt components and bottom end gaskets and seals

None of these items include labor, on a average build you estimated labor $1300 for labor build. Estimate $500 for shortblock assembly.

There is also machine work that needs to be done $1200. Hone the cylinders and perform cylinder resurface, pressure check, replacing valve guides, spring and retainers. Estimate $400 for bottom end machine work.

what would be a reasonable price to you? $4,000 - $5,000
I know it's across the country from you, but you could ship your short block to CNCWerx in New Hampshire and have them do the work for the prices listed above. They may do cylinder head work also, but I'm not sure. And I also agree with Txdragon - you probably don't need everything listed based on your goals.

yes $4-5k for total including parts and labor seems right. You can probably save with buying some used parts. Or, you may be able to pick up somebody's project motor for $3k-4k, you just need documentation
