I'm trying to install a video camera to record video while I drive in a 1986 Honda Accord. The cigarette lighter is constantly powered and the camera drains the battery if it is left plugged in (only alternative is to unplug it each time). I found the radio + power wire ("J" in the female plug body), but it is constantly powered (even though the radio does not power up until the key is moved to accessory.) The fuse "box" isn't helpful. Anyone have any suggestions?
Re: Locate a switched accessory power wire 4 camera
Thanks for responding.
No "head unit" or anything like it in this vehicle. Don't think they had much in 1986, this is an Accord DX manual Trans....The luxury is the radio AM & FM, no Cd no input lug. It was probably one of the cheapest car they sold.
Re: Locate a switched accessory power wire 4 camera
The 2dr coupe model?
Once you remove the stock radio, look at the wires of the factory plug. You don't have to unplug it or anything. Just compare it to the plug I shown above. On the aftermarket jumper harness, the yellow is +12VDC battery while the red is ACC +12VDC. When you tap into it, make sure you FIRST remove the negative battery terminal to avoid any blown fuses or arcs in case you do touch metal. Secure the connection with solder and good electrical tape. That should do it.
Re: Locate a switched accessory power wire 4 camera
Found it.
The first wire I checked was actually white and it was the 12v+ bat. wire.
The switched/ACC 12v+ wire is yellow with a red stripe. It is in the picture attached. I just turned the key to the Acc. setting and checked the next wire over and there it was. Switched 12v wire on 86 Honda accord wiring plug.
