What thread chaser for head install?
Well looks like my kids car needs the head replaced. I'm going to try to do it myself, researching parts to buy now. I see I need to get a thread chaser to clean the head bolt threads before installing the new head bolts, just wondering what size chaser do I buy. It's a 2000 civic dx. Thanks fellas
I would also suggest purchasing a thread pitch gauge. For the future, of course.
$12 on Amazon.
My die and tap set came with two of them, one SAE and one Metric. I find the thread pitch first then decipher the size after to see if I have the right die and the right tap.
Here is on that has both SAE and Metric in one set for 13 bucks CAD.

Importantly, use a proper chaser and not a tap which removes material. Nice to know Autozone does the rental, however you may find that your rental chaser is not long enough for the length of the hole. In this case, adapt a standard bolt of adequate length to the problem by creating your own DIY chaser.

If you have access to a plug tap (bottom tap), that's essentially the same thing as a thread chaser.
Though, I have found that using taps from the kits does it make it very easy to get crooked... and then the threads are ruined. Most of the kits only supply "middle" taps.
