Default Turbo D16Y7 questions.

So in another post I asked a few questions but I want to get into specifics and in depth.

1. I want to turbo my d16y7. Is there any extra reliability swapping to a Y8 or a Y8 head. I understand that with VTEC you can squeeze out a few more horsepower but is it actually more reliable? Could I increase reliability without doing the timing swap by adding an adjustable cam gear?

2. Cams are typically for making more power. Would a cam be a way to achieve good reliability? I want to just enjoy some boost and keep my gas mileage decent.

3. Will a coil on plug setup add to the reliability? I'm interested in it for theorized gas mileage maintenance as well. Will this keep the gas mileage a bit more than the stock Dizzy?

>>Give us a power target<<

1) If you gonna use forged internals id say find a good condition Z6 crank or a Z6 block. If not go to a guy thats very good with the D series building thing and will take time measure and double measure the beasing clearences.
Y8 head will help but with Y7 head and some aftermarket cam you can hit 300whp easy. If thats your powertarget its really doable with non vtec head. If you want 400whp its a different story.
2)Depends on power id definately get a cam if i wanted to go above like 280whp.

3) CoP is kinda overkill really but its a good mod whatsoever. Gas mileage needs a GOOD turbo manifold with a proper collector and turbine wheel on the bigish side for the gases to actually scavenge
without the turbine wheel or the bad manifold fuarking up exhaust pulses. You want it as NA flowing as it can get on the manifold - turbo side to be efficient and have good mpg.

I don't think a cam gear or COP are going to do what you want them to do. If you're really concerned about gas mileage I'd say just about all of that is going to come from spot-on part throttle tuning. I just did a nearly 400 mile round trip in my turbo D-series Civic this past weekend and running E85 (actually about 79% ethanol), I averaged around 20 mpg. I wasn't romping on it though, which can easily drive the mileage way down into the teens.

Without having read your previous posts, you're tossing the term "reliability" here like it is interchangeable with something else. Your build will be as reliable as its installer and parts quality. Keep that in mind!

1- VTEC isn't a bad idea for turbo although I notice a difference when I tune low and high separately (off and on VTEC). Honestly, with turbo applications, you really don't seem to miss VTEC, it is more prevalent in NA. Tuned right, you really won't feel the transition between low and high cam when you're boosted, whereas on NA applications, you WANT to feel that transition.

2- Cam choice should ultimately be based upon your setup and intended use. Your cam should be a compliment to your turbo; think about ketchup on fries. Adjustable cam gear may or may not be helpful for anything. It is really more dependent on the profile of the cam you choose whether or not you'll need any adjustments. Most cams available for the D-series don't *require* any setting outside of 0.0.

3- Coil on plug as mentioned, will be an expense added that wouldn't really be needed. Not even for added insurance purposes. D-series are not known for weak ignition systems. I'm using the stock system on my build and have no issues at all here, with a 60 dollar replacement distributor that is nearing 2 years old. Lol!

Your fuel mileage all depends on your setup, tune, and how heavy your foot is. My fuel economy can be decent (33mpg), or I can almost watch my fuel needle drop. I have burned up 1/8 to 1/4 tank of gas during 20 minute street tune sessions tuning wide open throttle.. On average though, I get about 330-340 miles out of 10-11 gallons.

What is your goal and use?

Vtec heads flow better even if you disable vtec altogether compared to non vtec heads

Please check out all of the SOHC turbo setups through this thread. It may have some older systems, but the knowledge hasn't changed over the years.
