I recently cracked a cylinder on my B series build and have no idea what constitutes a piston as reusable or not. I doubt this one is. Take a look at the attached images! No damage to the top, only the bottom skirt.
If the scratches aren't too deep you can polish it and reuse it. I'm not saying you should but it's been done. Probably better off just buying another piston.
Isn't one of the bottom edges of the skirt bent (4th thru 6th pics) ? The scratches ARE deep... check the first three pics from the top and look just under the oil/scraper ring.
He said he cracked a cylinder so I'm guessing he split a stock sleeve and this damage is from metal debris getting sandwiched between the skirt and bore. Engine probably wasn't shut down right away. Given the pistons lack any kind of dome I'm going to assume this is a turbo build. Stock sleeves will eventually give up even if a "safe" higher power level is maintained for awhile on a forced induction setup.
