I was letting my eg warm up the other day while putting on some new wheels and tires. Ran 15 to 20 minutes no problem. All of a sudden she started to idle lower, spit, sputter, then died. Tried to start the car back and she would try to start but backfire and not run more than a couple seconds. Changed the fuel filter, no difference. It is a cx with a d16z6 swap. I dont have another person to help check ignition. Any ideas? My only guesses are ignition related or timing belt jumped a tooth. It has always been hard to start when cold. But I just thought that was the iac valve and was too lazy to take it out and clean it.

Test the Ignition system/ coil for spark

 

Timing belt looks brand new and is in time. Checked the fire and have yellow spark.

 

Which crank and cam marks did you use? Can you post pics of cam alignment with crank set at TDC1?

 

Someone had marked the crank with the correct timing mark and the crank was up with the Mark's on either side aligned with the horizon of the head.

 

You did not use the correct cam alignment for the D16Z6 engine.

1) Set cam perfectly at TDC1 as shown below by turning the crank pulley ONLY counterclockwise.

2) Then look down at the crank pulley. Is the white TDC1 mark perfectly aligned with the pointer?

 

 

Focus first on using the correct method to check the mechanical timing.

Use a properly gapped spark plug to evaluate spark quality. Checking spark by shown method risks blowing the coil but suggests spark is okay.

 

Did it with a properly gapped plug. I assure you the mechanical timing is good.

Coil homed out to 1.8 ohms. Replacing the coil and going from there

 

Not sure I'd draw any conclusion from a nasty old spark plug.

Worth a shot.

I appreciate the help man, but I checked all four plugs in their individual plug wires. I seriously doubt all the plugs are bad. And, like I said, I verified the timing after you posted the correct timing mark. Plus coil ohms out bad at the correct temperature. It's raining and 35 degrees here and didn't get photos of the timing. I'll post once I replace the coil.

 

 

Coil fixed the car! Starts up and runs like a dream again!

 

Well the coil fixed car yesterday. I rode the car around, started up fine, etc. This morning I went out to start the car and it's doing the same thing again. Backfiring and no start.

 

Check for CEL codes.

Check for spark on all four plugs.

Double check mechanical and ignition timings.

 

Your still having spark issues, try testing or replacing the ICM this time inside the distributor.

 

Sorry for not responding for a few days. Got the spark issue fixed, then found out I had water in the gas. Drained the tank and put fresh gas in, runs like a top.
