opinions on aftermarket motor mounts vs OEM
Hello All,
I have a 99 Accord 2.3L automatic. I can see the front motor mount is cracked, so I am going to replace all 4 (I believe it's 4) mounts. My question is about aftermarket vs OEM. On a truck I owned, aftermarket bushing and mounts were much cheaper and worked just fine, but on my Toyota Camry the aftermarket ones were too stiff and caused an incredible amount of vibration, which forced me to take them all out and replace with OEM, and that solved the problem with the vibration. I believe on my Civic I had the same problem, but only on certain mounts, half worked with the aftermarket like beckly, but half caused vibration and required OEM. I searched but didn't really find a discussion on this. So...I thought I would ask. Opinions and experiences?
Thanks.

Front mount is a 'stopper' or limiter. It just prevents the engine from rotating too much, the rear mount is the real mount.
You will want to verify that teh rear mount itself is busted or if the controls for the mount have gone bad.
With AT cars there rear mount is ECM controlled to allow the engine to 'float' when not under power for NVH reasons. Idling in Drive.
When power is being applied the mount stiffens up.
On my '95 EX the rear mount itself was actually still good, but the vacuum control and rod jammed leaving the engine mount in the 'soft' mode, which then put the front stopper mount under excessive stress and tore.
Replaced both front and rear mounts with Anchor brand mounts. At the time I compared both front and rear mounts to the factory units. Same witness marks and brand fasteners. Is Anchor the OEM for Honda, I don't know. But the mounts that came out of the Anchor box were nearly identical, down to the same stamping witness marks and grease marks on the old mount.

Thanks! Appreciate it. I will look for anchor brand.
With the way the engine is rocking around (I had someone in the car and put it into forward and reverse, and you can see the engine move significantly in both directions, making me think both mounts at this time (front and rear) are dead.

Functionally the rear mount is probably 'dead', but if you do replace the rear mount, verify that the controls to it work, otherwise the mount may be damaged if it is left in the 'soft' mode.
Rear mount is a hydro mount on AT cars.
