Default Slow idle and loss of gas mileage.

Hello all,

Recently, my ‘96 Civic EX (D16Y8) began to idle slowly (200-300), after engine is warm and I’m stopped at lights.

When I was running the a/c, it’d go back up to 600-800, but now that I’m no longer using the a/c, it stays slow and feels like the car might stall, but it hasn’t, yet.

During this time, I also noticed a significant loss of gas mileage. Normally, I’d get around 260+ miles per tank, but last tank I only got around 200+.

FWIW: Several months back, I removed the TB & IACV and replaced with salvaged, which I thoroughly cleaned. (https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-.../#post51939021)

Any ideas?

Since you changed out the throttle body and IACV you need to jump service connector and adjust the idle screw so ecu can relearn the idle speed per helms manual.

Exactly... the first line above zero is 500 rpm.

May be time for a new o2 sensor.

FSM states idle should be around 750, double check though as the FSM is not in front of me.

Notice any misfiring? Have you done a compression test, or checked your spark plugs, plug wires, injectors?

To me it sounds like one of your cylinders may not be combusting right, but if one wasn't firing at all you'd definitely notice it.

After I made those changes, I followed the following idle relearn procedures: Started the car up with no loads like A/C or lights on and let it idle not touching the steering wheel or gas pedal for about 10 minutes. Then, just drove the car as I normally would, so the CPU could automatically relearn it's idle speed setting. Afterwards and since, I’ve been good to go.

Hmm? Thanks, for the clarification! That said, I’m the original owner of this car, and it typically idled and didn’t feel like it would stall, closer to, but definitely below 1,000 rpm.

Wouldn’t that make the CEL come on?

For USA, D16Y8 engine A/T, my FSM says:
”Check idle speed with no-load conditions: head-lights, blower fan, rear defogger, radiator fan, and A/C are not operating...

Idle speed should be: 700 +/- 50 rpm (in N or P position).”

But it also says: “Idle the engine for one minute with heater fan switch at HI and A/C on, then check the idle speed...

Idle speed should be: 810 +/- 50 rpm (in N or P position).”

Not sure if it’s misfiring, I have noticed the slow idle is a bit rough/bumpy, for lack of a better term...It feels like it might stall.

I don’t know how to do a compression test or check injectors. I have not yet checked the plugs & wires but I’m prepared to replace both, along with distributor cap & rotor.

Does your OP not agree with that?

Nah, FSM doesn’t say that when I stop at light with A/C on that the idle will drop to a point it feels like the engine is going to stall, stay low for a time but suddenly bounce up. This has also not been my experience as the original owner of this car.

Not to mention, you claimed it was idling at 200-300 rpm. What I would suggest is verify your idle. theres a tool for that.

Do a tune up as said earlier.

spark plug wire, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor and change out your air filter or if a CAI then rinse with warm water and reoil if need be. Also change out your fuel filter and run some fuel system cleaner such as STP. see if that helps, if you haven’t in awhile then it’s probably time too.

if that don’t help then try using throttle body cleaner to clean throttle body and IACV, also check to see if your valves are within specs as they can go out of spec over time.

Not to mention, that’s why I posted a pic. If you’re just going to be confrontational, then move along; that’s not very helpful, except to stroke your own ego.

Thanks! Tune up & fuel system cleaner sound like a good place to start. I’ve never done a fuel filter replacement or checked to see if valves are within specs, so I’ll lookup in FSM & do some online searches.

i don’t always agree with Tony’s wording but he knows his stuff, that said, the pic you posted is idling within spec. Hence the verification with correct tools..

Stroking ego, please point out where I was doing that. Every post I had in this thread points out where information was incorrect. My suggestion still stands. Get a tool to check your idle
