I have already replaced the distributor cap and rotor, as well as the main relay. After running for maybe a few minutes the car will shut off with the check engine light then turning on. Immediately after shutting off, the car will crank a lot before it will start again. Any ideas as to whats causing this? Thanks.

 

Your Ignition coil inside the distributor, replace it. FYI the coils inside SOHC distributors fit and work on DOHC distributors.

 

i changed the ignition coil and it shut off once again, no sputtering just instant. Could it be the igniter?? This is getting very frustrating.

 

It potentially can be the igniter, what is the CEL?
