Icon7 buying a 1987 honda civic dx (what should I know?)

civic dx hatchback. Its fairly good condition and has been taken good care of, 105,000 miles. As far as life of the engine or upcoming mechanical issues, what should I know?? Also if anyone knows a solution to dual carb the d15b2 engine PLEASE TELL ME. I have been looking around for days trying to find a part or thread, I just want to give my civic more power without too much sacrifice in life. Thanks!

very nice, I have its copy with the manual transmission and 178Kmiles. As for carb, the usual mod is the weber along with removing the vacuum spaghettis under the hood... but if you are in California this cannot be done and probably in a few other states, the car as to be kept as original for emission testing if you have any in your state/county.

those carb are a pain because it is a 3 barrel with non-obtainum parts such as the insulator gasket between intake and carb, some have managed to find this gasket... some online honda dealership are a good source for various OEM parts number such as hondapartscheap dot com

the honda autotrans are tricky because there is no accessible trans oil filter, so it is better to change what can be changed about 3q every 30K miles. Probably do it a few times if you buy the car to be sure of the cleanliness of the trans oil.

There was a good site redpepperracing dot com but the server is being redone... and it had many hints about the weber and the devac (removing vacuum line spaghetti) There is a facenook substitute but not too much traffic

Thanks man! I bought the car, seems nice inside, it's got 2 notable problems so far. The right seatbelt wont reel back in(so I need to know how to get to the spring) and the turn signals dont work(put new fuse in, didn't help. Havent checked relay, dont know where it is) engine looks nice, carb air filter is clean, it was tuned up recently. But yeah just need help with those 2 things!

Thanks a mil for your response, I'm guessing its multigrade 10w40? or would one use a semi or fully synthetic oil?

I also tried downloading the pdf manual on red pepper racing but it seems that its down.

Quick one, the only oil I can find closest to the API grading is a 20w50. I'm running that in the motor with no issues. Brilliant oil by petronas.

I can't find a 30 or 40 in the rating needed. Will it be safe to run a semi synthetic? That's in that range?

Running semi synth as well, castrol 10W30 winter or summer in Calif. When I did full synth there was a bit of a leak... my cranshaft seal is original, with 195Kmiles. Not planning any repair.
