Default 1998 odyssey high temp after rad replacement.

Hi all, great to be back on HT.
Just replaced a leaky rad on my 98 ody. Everything was working fine up until this replacement (fans worked and water was circulating). Now on start up the temp gauge instantly jumps past half and climbs from there. Water doesn't seem to be circulating as bottom hose is not getting hot but the top is.
My initial thought is air in the system but I cant burp the system long enough before the gauge is gets higher then I'm willing to let it run.(pretty much at the red)
Changed out the thermostat as I thought maybe it stuck close but still no change.
Which is the temp sensor? Left of top rad hose or is it the sensor right before the thermostat?
any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
