Default CALIFORNIA: Y8 in 95 civic bar’d able?

Got a d16y8 in my 95 civic with a z6 ecu. I was wondering if I can get the y8 bar’d with that ecu and would I need 96-00 headers and cat? Thanks.

hm... you have a new engine in your 95. I'd say no but I'll wait for others to respond.

Yes...However you will have to make it OBD2 compliant. My cousin had an OBD2 LS swap in his '95 Civic EJ coupe and he had to do the same thing when he relocated from NC to CA.

The emissions have to match the new motor, thus you will likely need the matching ecu.

hm, that would mean you'll need the proper harness so you won't have to worry about running wires all over the place. obd1 harness won't have the pins or wires for obd2.

OBD2 ecu, conversion harness, intake manifold, distributor, etc..

He wasn't too thrilled, having to scrounge up all of the "conversion" parts. CA Smog sucks *****...

It is a direct replacement engine, no bar necessary.

NVTurbo the B18 never came in a Civic in the US that's why he had to BAR it. Come on, this is basic 2006 stuff guys. Stop spreading bad information.

No need to referee it. It’s a replacement engine.

So the y8 is considered same engine family even tho it was never offered in a 92-95 usdm civic?

I guess its the same situation with the b20 being a replacement for the b18.

It's always been a replacement swap since they're both d16. Most shops over look d15/d16s anyway, it's always the dohc head that catches attention.

The Y8 came in a US Civic period. The only time year matters is when you try to use an engine that is older than the chassis it's going into (no obd1 engines in obd2 chassis, no obd0 engines in obd1 chassis). I haven't compared the engine labels to know if all years are in the same engine family but it's really lot a lot less complicated than you all make it seem.

When people start mixing parts from all the engines together is where you're going to get in trouble. Just use the long block and your cars stock intake manifold, exhaust, or approved CARB exempt parts until you know what you can get away with.

Thanks for the edit! I’m moving to socal in the next month or two so, i’ve been studying, but it’s still pretty unclear when you don’t actually live there.

Its even worse when people who don't live in the state, know the laws, or actually know what they're talking about add in their 2 cents.
