Default Vtec Switch

So, if I put a hot wire to a switch, to the green wire on my Vtec sylenoid, would my car "lobe" on idle with Vtec switched on? I wouldn't leave it on for a long period of time because running a full 12 volts to the Vtec sylenoid would probably burn it up, and its not something I'm trying to do for performance or anything like that... I just want to know if the Vtec cam on a stock z6 camshaft is large enough to make a lobing sound on idle. Let the hate comments begin... Thanks!

Probably not because there will not be sufficient oil pressure/volume to mechanically lock up the rocker arms at or near idle speed... maybe if you revved the engine to 2500 RPM or so and then did it... if you really want to make the engine lope at idle, you are going to have to buy a big camshaft and some springs/retainers to handle the extra lift. The cam will not work well at all through the low and mid range since you have stock pistons... but you aren't worried about power anyway. You just want people to THINK you have some.

Lol! Thanks man, that was the answer I was needing. I was expecting to get a bunch of hate mail and people telling me this is retarded, but I know it is.. I want to do this more to prank/mess with a co-worker, and make him think I've got power. Lol. Not something I'm gonna do permanently. Sounds like it's too much hassle just to make a noise. Oh well.

Not to mention the fuel maps at that range won't recognize that vtec is engaged. RLS

Right, I'm not concerned about being in Vtec or anything like that, it's basically the same principal as putting a big cam in an older car. Big cam lobes at low rpm=shitty timing,=lobing sound. Blop blop blop like the old muscle cars with big *** cams.

Not exactly lope but go listen to an old SVT Focus. Those had a big cam idle. More like a rally car sound than a can hardly idle v8 sound. You could probably achieve that sound on the VTEC lobes.

Thanks man, I'll YouTube some SVT Focus videos. I heard some pretty mean sounding locked Vtec idle vids on YouTube, but they were all turbo cars, and had who knows what else kind of work done to them.. possibly even upstaged cams. They were all locking in Vtec by switching the short and long pins in the rocker assembly, or by applying air pressure for racing purposes. I don't want to be in Vtec all the time bc my car would run like crap being on non Vtec fuel maps and all, I just want to be able to turn it on during idle when I want to. My concern now is thatsimply applying power to the sylenoid will not be enough to lock in Vtec on idle without raising oil pressure.

Concur. Your engaging vtec solenoid at an rpm that the stock ecu was not configured to engage vtec at therefore fuel maps will stay the same until that given rpm has been reached.

That's part of where the cammed sound comes from. The fact that with such large cam profile at such a low rpm means timing will be off quite a bit, and is where the misfires and pops come from I'm talking about. I imagine fuel amount won't matter too much, as long as it's getting enough to keep it running. Like an old muscle car that's cammed up so much that it sounds like it's just barely staying running on idle.
