Final Drive Questions
I spoke with a local mechanic today and asked him about changing out my final drive, he said that he would do it for $300 if I provide the parts. How much do shops typically charge?
Right now my car has around 7k, should I go ahead and get a clutch flywheel combo? Or keep stock clutch and just get a lightweight flywheel.

$300 is very fair if he's dropping the tranny, install 'em and put everything back together.
Unless you have lots of $$$ in your pocket, stock fly & clutch is good enough w/ 7k on the odo. If you have means for lighter fly & better cluthc, by all means do it at once.

Ive read a lot of reviews, but which would be the best clutch/flywheel to get?
I think I would get the same fidanza flywheel I have now and get an ACT clutch instead of an exedy although the exedy works fine.

You will also find people complaining that an 8.5-9# flywheel makes for slightly unpleasant shifting in daily driving because the revs fall off too quickly for gentle shifting.
To the original poster, think of it this way: would you pay yourself $300 to do it? This mod can be done by a brave novice, as long as you have all the right tools and a helper to get the tranny off and back on. My ITR tranny was the first I ever saw the inside of.
I drive my car about 50 miles per day, frequently in traffic, and people who know me well suggested I wouldn't be happy.

While I don't know you as well as some, I would disagree. However, that IS just my opinion

You do know the factory ITR pressure plate is notorious for breaking, right?
sack - who wonders why some people would buy a "street legal race car" with no sound insulation or cruise control, but still want a soft clutch pedal.

Sorry my post was in response to this comment
At any rate, after having to replace my factory clutch at 40,000 miles because the PP went bad, I can only recommend against replacing with a factory clutch. Isn't the Exedy Organic less expensive? I can recall only one problem posted here on h-t with an exedy organic, while I see the "What's a good clutch to get" or "Help my gears don't shift good anymore" once a week.

Nope. The price I got for a stock clutch was cheaper than Exedy.
Two of the four problems I mentioned were with Exedy friction disks, not the pressure plate.
The other two problems were Clutch Masters.
I understand your recommendation of *** Imports. Mike has great prices, and he bends over backwards trying to make sure people are taken care of.
One of the two Exedy problems was associated with him, and he warranteed the item even though a great deal of time had passed. Mike's price for an Exedy clutch set (organic replacement) for an ITR will be less than $300, including shipping.

Exedy isn't my first choice after having had an exedy in the car for 5000 miles. I would say ACT is a better option. And George the pressure plate leaf springs failing isn't suspect IMO.

Of course, I can just go pick one up from them within 10 minutes

And they have them in stock (or did when we went to get one for the b20)
You see Jorge? You are clearly making the wrong decision here. Exedy organic is superior to stock in every way

In addition to having a superior clutch, the box it comes in will also say "Daikin" on it....

George chose the stock clutch not only because of the price, but mostly because I suggested that that was all he needed for his use of the car. He tracks his car regularly and has been for the past 2 years or so, but most importantly he uses his car daily on the street. His stock clutch has been more than enough for over 60k miles providing him with a nice pedal feel and no problems at all. The stock ITR clutch is more than enough for most of us, but when replacing it we all tend to jump on the bandwagon and want to have “better” after market parts. Sometimes stock “is” better.
About the flywheel discussion. I have had after market FW's in 3 different cars. Jun, and Toda. I honestly can say I never thought the FW was worth it. I think most of us after spending $450 on a FW, try to tell ourselves that it is worth it to since we just spent that amount of $$. Think about it... Makes sense, right?

and of course, safety equipment.

I'm running a ATS F/D, Toda flywheel, with stock ITR clutch. I went with the ITR clutch because It was recommended for it's proven reliability and I have no regrets.
