Default Preloading clutch on lauch...doesn't it eat a lot of the clutch?

I thought about trying preloading the clutch at the races yesterday, but wouldn't that eat up the clutch bad??? As far as I can remember someone explained it as holding the ebrake up, then finding a mid point where the clutch is starting to grab...that way there's not a ton of force at once by dumping the clutch. Or does preloading the clutch not do much...since you're beating the **** out of the clutch anyways.

I suck at launching horribly....best was a 2.4 60ft. falken azeni's @ 30psi

yes, that will eat up your clutch - try lowering your tire pressure - start at about 16psi - practice launching at different rpm till you find what works

i dont think you wanna lower the psi too much on azenis...the side walls are thick...i ran em 2 nights ago @35psi 15" azenis...pulled a 2.2 a few times and i never heat em up....my lauches are at 3200rpm...

I run mine at 16psi on the passenger side, 17psi on drivers side... works well for me... 1.9-2.0 60's all night long.

* why the different tire pressure you ask? drivers side weighs a little more with you sitting on that side so the extra pound or two in that tire balences out the tread patch.

Here you go. The main reason that you would per-load the clutch is to take out any play or slop in the drive train. Mainly the air gab in the ring and pinion. That way when you lunch the gears are already touching and you minimize the changes of shearing teeth off of the ring gear. You are also putting the CV joints under load and will extend their life. You only need to let of the clutch a very small amount to accomplish this. Yes it does eat a clutch up a little bit but no more than street driving, However it saves trannys and axles plus you are not shocking the tires as hard when you launch.
