Honda 2002 Civic using 3 quarts of oil a week after head gasket replacement
My Honda 2002 civic started using up to 3 quarts of oil a week after the head gasket was replaced. The repair shop told me that since the top part of the engine was working better then the bottom part it maybe leaking oil in through the rings. I hope that is not the problem as I have put over $2000 into the car in the last 2 months and can't afford much more repair costs. There is no smoke coming out of the exhaust so it is not burning it. Any answers? compression tests were done and tey said it was fine.
It's either using it or losing it , it's going somewhere , any mechanic knows if you replace the head gasket and have the valves redone the increase in compression will wear on the lower half , nice of them to inform you after they did the work and took your money . If it had a bunch of miles on it then it was a losing bet having that work done . One mechanic told me he wouldn't bother with doing any head gasket because of that and plus all the crap that gets circulated through the motor from the failure never really gets cleaned out . But to each his own .
If they did a compression check and you don't have a 200 foot cloud of blueish smoke coming out of the tailpipe I doubt all that oil is getting past the rings. They most likely messed something up and that is the reason they gave you. I had a really old si once that had a little blueish smoke when I got on it. I could see the puff in my rear view mirror when I revved it up and shifted. I only had to add about a third or a fourth of a quart when I got a tank of gas.

Engine oil consumption is always caused by leaking and/or burning.
I always clean the engine thoroughly (aerosol cleaner & spray wand at a car wash), then carefully inpect for leaks using a mirror & flashlight.
3 quarts? you dont need to clean it to find out.. they prolly put the wrong head gasket on it and is leaking out.
