Troubleshooting: After replacing head gasket... Reservoir overflow issues
Hey,
So I've just finished up replacing my head gasket after noticing some foam in coolant reservoir and an exhaust smell inside coming from it.
After flushing the radiator, I filled it back up with new coolant and then idled the engine to get the air bubbles out with a funnel still attached to the coolant cap.
As i waited i noticed some bubbles from time to time (as expected), but also foudn that slow the coolant would rise almost overflowing out of the funnel before suddenly dropping until there was nothing in the funnel at all.
Especially when the engine was up to temperature this happened frequently, where the coolant would quickly rise and almost overflow, before the radiator fan kicked on and the coolant dropped back down. Obviously if there was no funnel this would be going into my reservoir.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this? Is this normal radiator behaviour? Or do I still have a leak somewhere and exhaust gasses are still escaping?
Thanks

Bubbles after bleeding the coolant system are generally a sign of a leaking gasket. Compression is going into your coolant jacket from what it sounds like. Those funnels do a really good job of bleeding all the air out so if your still consistently getting air bubbles it would point to a leaky head gasket or cracked sleeves which would have been pretty easy to spot
To my knowledge, the only thing that can cause a radiator overflow bottle to overfill on these cars is a blown head gasket and/or warped cylinder head.
When you pulled the head did you check for warpage as described in the Honda service manual?
