You really don't use one, Even for the VSS sensor, which is checked via the ECU trouble codes.

A scanner is only a device that provides information. It is up to the end user to decipher the information and determine whats wrong.

However the amount of information you obtain is limited by the scanner choice, and amount of modules and data the vehicle has access to. In your case,that old EK has very few modules and even less data. And nothing is available for MT


If the issue is electrical in nature, a DMM and wiring diagram is your route. If it is mechanical in nature,nothing but experience(and possibly Goggle search) will help you here....
