88 Sedan auto false neutral
Picked up an 88 Sedan for next to nothing. Pretty good shape, even freezing cold ac. But after warming up, 4th gear slips to false neutral. After stopping it seems to reset and be ok for a bit again. Searched and Googled for someone with a similar scenario. I've drained and refilled with Honda atf twice. It seemed to help a little but wondering if this could be a sensor or solenoid? Doesn't make any noises and all other gears are clean shifting and snappy. Any advice appreciated before wrenching further. Or, any links to rebuilt ef auto trannys. It's a daily so don't want to go through putting a 5 speed.
my advice would be to remove the solinoid on the auto trans and clean it out with brake clean
theres a little screen in there that gets clogged
then drive the car slow for a few miles and see if it fixes your problem
and sometimes it takes a day or two for the solinoid to start working properly again
so drive it a little after then park it, then the next day try again ect
this works 60 percent of the time
so its worth a try
let me know how it goes

Didn't help but didn't seem to need it. Very clean. Drained and refilled 3x. The original fluid seemed in good shape but it's been done anyway. I added a splash of Lucas stop slip. It delayed the slipping for another 15 minutes. It seems like heat is the enemy of these automatics. Thinking about a little more Lucas and an independent atf cooler with filter. My theory is the Lucas is so much thicker and takes longer to heat up. Tranny works great until it heats up and only slips in 4th. Hopefully buy myself a year...
