Default Replace?...or SWAP? -- D16y7 to what engine?

My friends '97 just threw a rod -- so swap or replacement time and I am looking for good input on what would make the most sense in this scenario and why. Thanks in advance.

It depends on what sense you’re looking at.

Upgrade? B-series engine and trans.

Financial? Replace engine only with the same model.

Good answer, several more questions: Curious what upgrade would look like in terms of engine model(s) and cost. Also, how much more are JDM engines than going price of an used D16y7. Would a di6y8 upgrade require new ECU? Would it it require new trans? What would it entail? Lastly, how much would a shopncharge for labor to remove/install d series engine? Rough estimate on reasonable going rate. What are best vendors for buying said engines?

Dude... you can only go UP from there. Short of an HX engine... EVERYTHING is an upgrade !!!

Seriously, another "D" series will be the most economical... so a Y8 longblock and ECU will work with the transmission and accessories that you have keeping the overall cost low. Jumping up to a "B", "H", or "K" series will require changing everything... but the with greater expense comes greater reward. How much coin do you have to toss at this little adventure ???

If the shell is empty and if I were on a budget, I’d look for an Integra engine and manual transmission combo.
