It seems as though my cable is stretching, or is bending my pedal assembly. Either way it has been creaking for years, high pedal effort and running a heavy pressure plate, so I believe that failure may be imminent.

I will be using a 90-93 Integra cable since I am GSR swapped, but it looks like OEM ones have been discontinued through dealerships. The common aftermarket brands are pure crap from what I have read about them (ATP, Pioneer, etc.)

Looking on parts geek, they have one listed as "Genuine OEM" and it's $75 which seems about right, but there is no information about who actually makes this cable...

I'm using a Hasport cable to hydro, so it uses a hydro tranny with a clutch cable. It works great but I would not recommend, for the cost you can get a full hydro conversion now days. Plus it really crowded the lower rad hose, and rubs on it.

 

Yeah for now I am full cable clutch and cable tranny, no hydro here. The cables are cheap enough, just don't want to deal with one breaking instantly which I've heard can happen with the crappy aftermarket ones. Everyone says go oem, but they are not available.

Plan is once this tranny dies, I will go full hydro. Someday.

 

How different are those cables from the L3/D16 clutch cables? I had no trouble finding an OEM one for mine.

Would going back to a lighter clutch be an option?

Not sure if its been done before, but would extending the clutch lever at the trans be helpful?

 

Well, I already discovered that my pedal assembly has failed, I'm lucky I can even get the car into gear at all. I'm going to replace the cable most likely while I fix the pedal assembly and add some reinforcement to it. As far as I know, only a 90-93 Integra cable will work optimally.

 

Found an "exedy" cable on ebay. Are they the oem supplier for honda?

I bought an AutoZone cable way back when and took it back the same day and went and bought an OEM one. I do remember the large strain relief for where the cable comes through the firewall was metal (yellow zinc) on the OEM one and silver plastic on the AZ one. Not sure if Exedy is the mfg of the OEM cable, but you'll know a genuine Honda one when you see it.

 

Well I am completely striking out here. OEM replacements for the 90-93 Integra are not available. I do not really want another 30 year old cable just for the sake of getting an OEM one.


SO, I am left with the aftermarket options, all of which from what I can tell, suck ***.

I am leaning towards trying the one on ebay that is listed as mfd by Exedy/Daikin clutch, as they are so far the only reputable brand that supposedly makes a brand new one. I don't actually know the brand of the one I have, it could be an Autozone cable, could be OEM, who knows. It still works, so rather than buy another cable that I know is subpar or is old and probably on it's last leg I would almost just rather keep what I have.

Edit: Found the same Exedy part number cable on thmotorsports for less than 1/2 the price, ordering it today. They are in fact the OE clutch and flywheel manufacturer for all the major Japanese OEMs, so this should be as good as it gets.

 

Well it keeps getting better.

So thmotorsports was out of them, they cancelled my order immediately. Digging around a bit, looks like Exedy stopped making the CC660 anywhere from 5-10 years ago, so even this will not be an option for long.

It looks like some sellers on ebay and amazon still have them, though they may not be identified easily by part number, and they all want at least $80.

Could the original EF/ED cable not be made to fit? Might be a silly question but just wondering how different they are.

 

Have you tried lubing the cable? I'm about to try that for mine.

 

It can be, I remember seeing some write-ups where you have to cut the cable sheathing back an inch or two to make it work. Just be careful not to cut into the cable itself I haven't checked, but I doubt there are any new OEM replacement cables available for EF's either.


Yes, using white lithium grease spray. It helps for a while, at least makes it less squeaky.

I have an Exedy one on the way I found on Amazon, so we'll see how the quality looks when it gets here.

That is good to note that the EF one is still available! I looked everywhere for the 90-93 Teg ones with no luck.

Unfortunately with a B swap, the regular EF cable needs to be modified to work.

 

I have been using the Integra cable from AZ for nearly 12 months with no issues, quality seems fine so far. The Integra cable is longer and bolted straight up no modifications needed.

 

That's weird. I've always ran the OEM original for the EF and never had an issue with it working as is, although it is basically nonadjustable like it is now. It's either adjusted to where it works or doesn't work at all (aka no room to change the engagement point for the pedal). Had to replace it once too, so I know it's the original EF OEM style unmodified. I wonder if I perform the modification you are referencing if it will give me back that adjustment?

 

The cheap parts store cables probably work fine for a stock type clutch. For a stage 5, I doubt it.

Yes, it might. There is supposed to be enough adjustment that you could change the engagement point to anywhere within the range of pedal motion. 1.5" of cable could certainly do that.
