Default Jerky take off, strong engine braking around 40-45

Hello all,

I have a 2000 Civic that runs fairly well. It only has about 115k miles on it. Got it from a family member that no longer drives. What I notice about it is that when I take off from a stop, I barely press the gas and it takes off really jerky as if I gave it way more gas. And then when I am decelerating from freeway speeds to lower, it has a really strong engine braking around 45-40 miles an hour. Almost feels like someone tapped the brakes hard. It cruises relativey smoothly, no engine codes. I think its all mostly original besides normal maintenance and timing belt replacement. What to check replace first? I thought about getting new plugs, cap, rotor and just doing a tuneup. But seems like maybe more than just that?

Thanks

Check if it's had the throttle cable recall done.

Is it a manual?

Is this your first manual?

Ah ok, thanks, wasn't aware of that. I'll ask him if he remembers or has any paperwork.

When is the last time the fluid in the transmission has been changed?

The sudden decel could be the transmission shifting down a gear, happens in my 05 from 15-10mph naturally when it automatically shifts down to 1st.

those symptoms sound alot like a bad or uncalibrated TPS. but my only reference is in manual cars so i am not sure if auto would be the same as far as those symptoms go.
